The chapel of Panagia Faneromeni in Nea Skioni is located 2 km east of our village - on the site where Ancient Skioni was previously discovered. It was built right on the shore and is decorated with beautiful frescoes from the 16th century AD. The chapel, like the surrounding area, belonged to the monastery of Flamouriou in Thessaly. When Thessaly was liberated from the Turks in 1881 AD, the church was given to the Theological School of Chalkis, to which it belongs to this day. The church houses an icon of the Virgin Mary, painted on a vertical marble pedestal.
The legend about the chapel says that a citizen of Skioni saw a light in the sea approaching the shore. Deciding that it was a pirate ship, he returned to the village to warn his fellow villagers. In the morning, when the light reached the shore, they saw that it was a large piece of marble with the Virgin Mary painted on it, floating on the sea. The villagers were impressed by the miracle and asked the local Turkish Bey to allow them to build a small church to house the icon. But he refused, threw off the image and began to trample on it. The image suddenly became soft, like clay, and grabbed the bey's legs, preventing him from escaping. Then the bey repented and, asking for forgiveness, allowed the construction of this small church.
